An expanded Speedway gas station in Buffalo Grove may qualify as a truck stop under state law, but village officials assured the public Monday that the facility will not operate like one.

Officials said the expanded station at 201 N. Milwaukee Ave. will be permitted to operate up to 10 video gambling machines because of the truck stop classification, but it will not offer other amenities traditionally found at truck stops, such as overnight parking, showers, laundry machines and a sit-down restaurant.

"It's just merely a title that they are using so that we can have other amenities at that gas station," village Trustee Joanne Johnson said.

The expansion approved by trustees Monday will combine the existing 2-acre station property with the neighboring 1.5-acre site at 251 N. Milwaukee Ave. A two-story office building on that property will be demolished.

"We are removing one unsightly building from Milwaukee Avenue," Johnson said. "We're tearing down an older gas station and replacing it with one larger gas station."

Deputy Director of Community Development Nicole Woods told the village board the renovated station will include a new auto fuel canopy, commercial fueling lanes and a convenience store.

"There will not be the typical characteristics of a truck stop that you see along the interstate," Woods said.

Besides improving the appearance of the area, the project is expected to bring in additional motor fuel tax revenues for the village, officials said.
