No injuries in fire that leaves Elgin home uninhabitable

No one was hurt in a Thursday fire that caused an estimated $50,000 damage to an Elgin home.

The Elgin Fire Department responded just before 2 p.m. on Thursday to reports of a structure fire on the 500 block of Willis Street. The first crew arrived within four minutes and found a one-story home with a fire burning in the kitchen.

Firefighters deployed a hand line and quickly put out the fire, according to a news release. There was fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the home.

An occupant of the home was there when the fire started and safely exited before firefighters arrived. The home was red-tagged as uninhabitable.

The fire is under investigation.
