Aurora man faces additional charges stemming from Naperville unrest last summer

An Aurora man faces additional felony charges stemming from incidents of looting and vandalism during last summer's unrest in downtown Naperville, police said.

Diego Vargas, 25, is charged with burglary and criminal damage to property as a result of a police investigation into acts of violence that occurred June 1, 2020, according to a Naperville news release.

Authorities say Vargas entered and committed a theft at the Pandora Jewelry store on the 100 block of South Main Street. He also is accused of causing between $500 and $10,000 in damage by punching and kicking the windows of Beidelman Furniture on the 200 block of South Washington Street.

Vargas is already in federal custody on charges he "maliciously attempted to damage and destroy" Egg Harbor Cafe by throwing an explosive device into the restaurant on the 100 block of Jackson Avenue, police said.

More than 30 downtown businesses were vandalized or looted June 1, 2020, when a group of 250 to 300 people moved through the area between 9 p.m. and midnight, resulting in 11 arrests that night, Naperville officials said. Investigations are ongoing into the crimes committed.
