Man arrested in road rage case that prompted school lockdown

A 23-year-old Chicago man was arrested Friday after a fit of road rage in which he displayed an airsoft gun in an unincorporated area near Marengo, according to the McHenry County sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said Prairie Grove Junior High and Prairie Grove Elementary School went on lockdown for less than half an hour. Only teachers and staff members were present at the time.

Donovan C. Stewart, 23, faces two misdemeanor counts of aggravated assault. He is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 25.

The case occurred in the area of Deerpass and River Road about 9:15 a.m.

Deputies said a witness reported that the driver of a black 1997 Toyota RAV4 displayed what appeared to be a handgun.

A short time later, officers from the Lakewood Police Department spotted the SUV and shared the information with other police agencies.

Officers from the Prairie Grove Police Department then saw the SUV pull into the Prairie Grove Junior High campus and drive to the rear parking lot.

Deputies said Stewart was quickly detained by sheriff's deputies and officers from Prairie Grove.

Stewart drove to the junior high school because he was employed by a company hired by the district, the news release said. He is not a school district employee.
