Glen Ellyn reinstates downtown parking restrictions

Glen Ellyn has reinstated downtown parking restrictions in permit lots, citing a projected uptick in commuter traffic and the start of the new school year.

Last month, Metra reported averaging 65,700 riders a day for the week ending July 9, up from 45,900 at the start of June.

Metra commuters and downtown visitors can use a new parking garage that opened in May behind the Civic Center at 535 Duane St.

The ground level and second floor of the garage offer free, three-hour customer parking with additional free public parking throughout the garage after 3 p.m. daily and on weekends. There is no parking in the garage from 2 to 6 a.m., except by overnight permit.

Several parking lots near the Prairie Path also are free to downtown customers, employees and commuters weekdays after 11 a.m. and all day on weekends, with no time restrictions.
