Watch the birdie: Badminton club coming to Buffalo Grove

Buffalo Grove village trustees granted a special use permit Monday allowing an 18,000-square-foot badminton club to open in an industrial park on the community's northeast side.

Thomas Chen and Sandy Liang plan to operate Midwest Badminton Club at 1362 Barclay Blvd., a vacant space previously occupied by Buffalo Grove Gymnastics. The pair opened the first Midwest Badminton Club in 2010 and have existing locations in Woodridge and Naperville.

The facility will feature nine badminton courts, taking up about 80% of the space, along with a lobby, kitchen, office area and storage space, according to village documents.

The club will host classes for up to 39 students, as well as open play. Its hours would be 3 to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.

Liang previously told the planning and zoning commission that the facility is designed for training and leisurely play, not tournaments.

The petitioners said the operation would be similar to the former gymnastics training center, which operated there for 30 years.

The club will share a 51,000-square-foot building with Trane Supply and the Marriott Theatre Rehearsal Warehouse.

The special use permit was approved without discussion Monday as part of the village board's consent agenda.
