Gurnee library closed by HVAC emergency

After briefly reopening Wednesday afternoon, Warren Newport Public Library has again closed because of an issue with its heating and air conditioning system, and a reopening date and time remains uncertain.

After closing Monday for the Fourth of July holiday, library officials announced that the building would remain closed Tuesday because of the HVAC issues.

Noreen Reese, the Gurnee library's deputy director, said Thursday that the issues - a failure in the library's main air handler - began Sunday.

The library was able to reopen at 1 p.m. Wednesday after technicians put a temporary fix into place, Reese said. But later that afternoon, staff learned that the temporary fix was not sustainable and made the decision to close until the issue can be resolved completely.

Reese said because of heat waves happening across the country, the manufacturer of the HVAC system has not yet been able to send out a technician. The HVAC system was installed when the library underwent a renovation in 2011.

There is no reopening date set. Reese said the library will keep residents informed at its website, wnpl.info.
