Two small fights stopped by Gurnee police at Great America this week

Gurnee police were called upon twice this week to respond to small fights at Six Flags Great America, neither of which are believed to be connected to the larger fight near the park's entrance last month.

One person was injured in a fight Sunday and no one was injured in a fight Monday that led to four citations, officials said.

Gurnee Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said the fights were not related to each other or the big fight June 13 that led to three juveniles and two adults being charged.

Gaylor said officers were unable to find the person or people who struck a 16-year-old boy during a fight at the park at around 8 p.m. Sunday. The boy, who was in and out of consciousness, was initially treated by emergency medical personnel hired by the park and was rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by the Gurnee Fire Department, Gaylor said.

A bystander captured video of the fight and showed it to officers, but officers were not able to find the five to seven people believed to have been involved, Gaylor said.

Gaylor said Monday that one adult and three juveniles were issued citations for their role in another small fight. She said investigators determined the people involved didn't know each other and fought Monday evening after exchanging words during the day. Gaylor said no one was hurt.

Gaylor said six Chicago residents have been charged so far for their roles in the larger June 13 fight. Investigators determined that the people who have been charged all knew each other before the fight but do not yet know the circumstances that led to the melee.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Shada Miller, 26, of Chicago for two counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer and two counts of resisting a peace officer. Two other Chicago adults - 41-year-old Aaren Verrett and 40-year-old Danielle Williams - are charged with disorderly conduct. Three juveniles - one age 15 and two age 17 - were also charged. One of the 17-year-olds was charged with disorderly conduct and the other two were charged with resisting a peace officer.

Caitlin Kepple, a spokeswoman for Great America, said safety of guests and employees is their highest priority and park leaders have zero tolerance for any unlawful behavior.

"Our public safety team works in close partnership with the Gurnee Police Department to maintain a security presence inside and outside the park," Kepple said.
