Chicago man pleads not guilty to beating Round Lake Park woman

A Chicago man who police say entered his ex-girlfriend's Round Lake Park home and savagely beat her last August pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a litany of charges stemming from that and two other criminal cases against him.

Kevin J. Calhoun, 31, attended the virtual court hearing Wednesday from the Lake County jail where he remains on a $500,000 bail. He would have to put up $50,000 cash to leave jail while his cases are pending.

Calhoun is charged with felony counts of home invasion, criminal trespass to residence, domestic battery, violation of an order of protection and other charges in connection to the August attack. The home invasion charge is a class X felony and could carry a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

Calhoun also faces charges in a case from 2019. He is charged with twice violating terms of his child sex offender status by loitering near a Libertyville school where children under 18 were present and for being present in a Libertyville park where children under 18 were present.

Calhoun is also charged in a separate case with violating an order of protection on April 29.

Last week Round Lake Park Police Chief Daniel Burch detailed his department's version of the August attack. Burch said by the time officers arrived to a home on the 300 block of Forest Glen Drive at 11:31 p.m. Aug. 18, Calhoun had fled. Investigators said a woman at the house, later determined to be a former girlfriend of Calhoun's, said Calhoun entered the home while she was asleep and started beating her.

She said he was yelling that he was going to kill her while he beat her and dragged her out of bed, Burch said.

The woman said she slept with her phone in her hand and was able to call 911, Burch said. She said Calhoun noticed that she had called the police, became further enraged and smashed her phone, Burch said.

She told officers that Calhoun tried to push her into a backroom of the home so her children would not hear the beating and wake up, Burch said. He said she kicked Calhoun and ran out of the house, where she met the officers.

Calhoun is next due in court on Aug. 16.
