Police: Chicago man beat Round Lake Park woman while she slept

A Chicago man who police say entered his ex-girlfriend's Round Lake Park home and savagely beat her last August was indicted by a Lake County grand jury on Wednesday for charges including felony home invasion.

Kevin J. Calhoun, 31, is also charged with felony counts of criminal trespass to residence, domestic battery, violation of an order of protection and other charges. The home invasion charge is a class X felony and could carry a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

Round Lake Park Police Chief Daniel Burch said Friday that officers were dispatched to a home on the 300 block of Forest Glen Drive at 11:31 p.m. Aug. 18. When they arrived, they found a woman, who they later determined was a former girlfriend of Calhoun's, on the front lawn. The woman told officers that Calhoun was in the house and that she was afraid he was going to kill her children, Burch said.

Officers searched the home but Calhoun was not there, Burch said. The children were unharmed.

The woman, who had fresh injuries on her head and body, said she was asleep when Calhoun started beating her. Calhoun did not live with the woman and was not supposed to be at the house because of an order of protection. She said he was yelling that he was going to kill her while he beat her and dragged her out of bed, Burch said.

The woman said she slept with her phone in her hand and was able to call 911, Burch said. She said Calhoun noticed that she had called the police, became further enraged and smashed her phone, Burch said.

She told officers that Calhoun tried to push her into a backroom of the home so her children would not hear the beating and wake up, Burch said. He said she kicked Calhoun and ran out of the house, where she met the officers.

Calhoun was taken into custody on or around May 28 and remains in Lake County jail. A judge set Calhoun's bail at $500,000 which means he would need to post $50,000 in cash to leave jail while his trial is pending.

Calhoun is set to appear before a judge on July 1 for an arrangement hearing.
