Man charged with first-degree murder in expressway shooting that killed Elgin teen

Illinois State Police charged a man Thursday with first-degree murder in connection with a 2020 Eisenhower Expressway shooting, according to a news release.

Dezhawn D. Seargent, 27, of Maywood is being held in Cook County Jail without bond, according to the police release.

On Aug. 15, 2020, Illinois State Police responded to a shooting on I-290 eastbound at Central Avenue at about 4:13 a.m., according to the news release. Police found two women inside the car - a 21-year-old from Chicago and a 19-year-old from Elgin - had been shot, and they were taken to a local hospital. The 19-year-old later died as a result of her injuries from the shooting, the release said.

The investigation is open and ongoing. No further information was available.
