Major water main break reported in Elmhurst

Elmhurst officials reported a major water main break Thursday evening on York Road north of I-290.

A news release from the city about 8:30 p.m. said crews had isolated the leak and restored pressure to the system. The repairs will continue during the overnight hours.

The city has ordered a precautionary boil order until further notice - meaning only bottled water or water that has been boiled for five minutes should be consumed or used for brushing teeth, cooking, washing dishes, making ice, or washing produce. The release said washing hands, doing laundry, taking a shower and flushing toilets is safe.

City officials will alert the public when the precautionary boil order is lifted.

The city advised businesses that needed help assessing next steps during the boil order to call the DuPage County Health Department about proper procedures at (630) 682-7400.
