HERALD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: New Trier's Carmen and Fiona Connor-Crewe
Twin sisters and seniors Carmen Connor-Crewe and Fiona Connor-Crewe helped New Trier to a third-place finish in the Illinois High School Association girls water polo state finals. Securing their top state finish in five years, the Trevians (26-5) earned the program's highest winning percentage in coach Matt Wendt's 12-year tenure.
A volleyball convert, goalkeeper Fiona Connor-Crewe earned second-team all-sectional in her first time playing high school water polo. Improving her blocking and passing throughout the season, in 20 games she made 181 saves and recorded a 5.25 goals-against average.
"She came up with huge saves in our final games, including some point-blank shots with no defenders," Wendt said.
Sister Carmen Connor-Crewe, a field player, entered the state quarterfinals against York with 26 goals and turned it up from there. The all-Central Suburban League pick finished with 34 goals and 17 assists.
"Carmen went on a tear at the end of the season, scoring three goals against Evanston in our sectional final, a team-leading four goals against York in our quarterfinal game, and three goals against Hersey in the third-place consolation final," Wendt said.
"They supported each other all season and really care for each other," he said. "It's a really cool story."
