Sheriff's office says driver had stolen handgun in car

A Michigan man was arrested Wednesday for possession of a stolen firearm on I-90 west of Elgin after being stopped for multiple traffic violations, the Kane County sheriff's office said.

The loaded Ruger 9 mm handgun was found in the center console of the car when police searched it after detecting the smell of cannabis, according to a news release issued Thursday.

The driver, Dujwan Berry, 41 of Niles, Michigan, told officers he purchased the gun on the street in Indiana, but it was reported stolen in 2019 in Michigan, the sheriff's office said

Berry was charged with being an armed habitual criminal, possession of a stolen firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a firearm, being a felon in possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon without a FOID card.

Kane County deputies said they recovered this stolen and loaded Ruger 9mm handgun from the center console of a car driven by Michigan resident Dujwan Berry on Wednesday morning. Courtesy of the Kane County sheriff's office
