Hoffman Estates named Tree City USA for 30th time
Hoffman Estates, for the 30th consecutive year, has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
To be designated a Tree City USA, a community must have an established tree board or department, a tree care ordinance and a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita.
Run in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Tree City USA program was created in 1976 to provide the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees.
The village's efforts will be on display from 10 a.m. to noon, when the Sustainability Commission, in partnership with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, will offering free saplings to residents. Up to two saplings per household can be picked up at the Public Works Center, 2305 Pembroke Ave.
The village asks that residents not plant the trees in parkways, and to consider how they may affect utilities and drainage as they grow.
