Elgin historic district walking tour set for Saturday

Sign up for the "Walking Tour: Architects of the Spring-Douglas Historic District" in Elgin on Saturday, May 15.

Between 1885 and 1940, prominent Elgin citizens chose North Spring Street and Douglas Avenue for their new dwellings, contracting with local architects whose notable designs were already well-known in Elgin and elsewhere.

Join a leisurely stroll through the district with architectural historian Rebecca Hunter and learn about these architects and their use of the elements of architectural style. Hear about the role of historic preservation in maintaining and re-creating the original features of these homes.

The walk will take place form 10:30 a.m. to noon. Meet in the parking lot across from 903 Center St., the former hospital building. Wear comfortable walking shoes. To RSVP, email Rebecca Hunter, rebeccahunter1216@gmail.com.
