Man gets 19 years for Willowbrook attack

A Chicago man was sentenced Friday to 19 years in prison for beating his former girlfriend - the mother of their two children - in a Willowbrook hotel.

Dwayne Dykes, 43, of the 5400 block of South Wood Street, will have to serve at least 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

He was found guilty in October of one count of aggravated domestic battery and two counts of domestic battery, all felonies. He was also found guilty of misdemeanor resisting a peace officer.

The two argued, and Dykes punched the woman, breaking her nose, according to court records. She fell to the ground, and he kicked her, authorities said.

"Despite the fact that the victim in this case refused to testify, not only was Mr. Dykes found guilty of beating the mother of his children, he was also sentenced to a significant amount of time behind bars," DuPage State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "The successful prosecution of Mr. Dykes and subsequent lengthy prison sentence demonstrates my office's firm commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence."
