Chicago man gets 20 years after multiple Aurora-area carjackings

A 27-year-old Chicago man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison April 22 after a several Aurora-area carjackings, officials said.

At about 5:30 a.m. June 29, 2019, Calvin Taylor, of the 1300 block of North Lorel Avenue, approached a man pumping gas into his 2004 Kia Sedona van in the 300 block of South Broadway Avenue in Aurora, pointed a 9 mm handgun at the man and then drove away in the Kia, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney.

Taylor then crashed the Kia nearby at Indian Trail and Lake Street. A man who was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Impala stopped, got out of his car and asked Taylor if he needed help, officials said. Taylor jumped into the Impala, drove off and crashed and rolled the car near the Farnsworth Road entrance ramp onto eastbound I-88, officials said.

A woman who was driving a 2008 Dodge Avenger, which was struck by Taylor, asked if he needed help when Taylor took the Avenger and fled onto eastbound I-88.

Illinois State Police pursued Taylor until he crashed in Cook County, then took him into custody as he attempted run away from authorities on foot. Police found Taylor's pistol in the Kia and Taylor was on parole at the time, officials said.

In accordance with Illinois law, Taylor is eligible for day-for-day sentencing, meaning he may get a day off his term for each day served, and receives credit for 661 days served in the Kane County jail.
