Man charged in Aurora Wendy's carjacking in which woman shot in the back

A Harvey man has been charged in connection with a January carjacking that severely injured a woman in Aurora after she was shot in the back.

Charges of aggravated battery, aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed violence were filed Tuesday against Edward J. McGee, 26, of the 15600 block of Turlington Avenue, according to authorities. They are all felonies punishable by 6 to 30 years in prison.

He is also charged with a lesser felony of receiving, possessing or selling a stolen motor vehicle.

The attack happened around 4 p.m. Jan. 16 in the parking lot of a Wendy's restaurant on Orchard Road. The woman was sitting in her Hyundai Santa Fe and eating lunch when a Ford Escape pulled up and several people got out and surrounded the victim's SUV.

The attackers pulled her out, shot her in the back and stole her SUV.

The victim suffered a shattered vertebra, and a bullet was lodged against her spinal cord. According to posts on a GoFundMe fundraising page, she spent six weeks in hospitals and rehabilitation centers and is now home. She uses a wheelchair to get around.

Bail was set at $500,000, and McGee is in the custody of the Kane County jail.

A juvenile has also been charged in the case. A third suspect died in an unrelated incident, according to authorities.

McGee's next court date is May 7.
