Bond set at $500,000 for Aurora man accused of firing gun into girlfriend's car

Bond was set at $500,000 April 5 for an Aurora man who was accused of strangling his girlfriend and firing shots into her car in March, authorities said.

Elyas Taha, 29, of Aurora was charged with one count of armed violence, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated domestic battery-strangulation, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney. Taha's next court appearance is scheduled for May 13.

At 9:09 a.m. March 25, Aurora police responded to a call reporting shots fired on the 2600 block of County Oaks Court. After investigating the incident, police say Taha and his girlfriend got into an argument in which he hit her several times and choked her for fifteen seconds, the news release said.

After releasing her, Taha fired two shots into the driver's side taillight of her car and one into the driver's side of the back bumper, authorities said. While Taha was shooting the car, his girlfriend was standing next to the driver's side of it, the news release said.

Taha then fled the scene on foot. Aurora police found him still in the neighborhood 20 minutes after arriving at the scene and took him into custody, according to the news release.
