Man charged with drunk and distracted driving in fatal Aurora crash

A North Aurora man was drunk and trying to get directions on his cellphone when he hit and killed a man early Sunday morning in Aurora, according to authorities.

Jace S. Williams, 24, of the 500 block of North Sycamore Lane, is charged with three felonies: failure to report an accident involving death, aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and aggravated use of a communication device involving death, according to Kane County court records.

The victim is Juan Carlos Zamudio, 18, of Aurora, police reported.

According to a news release from the Aurora Police Department, the crash happened at 12:50 a.m. at Indian Trail and Mitchell Road. Witnesses told police Zamudio was hit by a pickup truck.

Police posted an alert on Twitter and Facebook seeking information about the crash.

Shortly before noon Sunday, Williams came to the police headquarters and told the front-desk officer he was the driver. He told them he was trying to input an address into his phone, for GPS-based directions, when the crash occurred.

Kane County Judge David Kliment set bail for Williams at $50,000 Monday afternoon. He would have to post $5,000 to be released. He was ordered to not drink or take illegal drugs, and will have to undergo random alcohol tests.

Williams next court date is April 7.

If convicted of the most serious charges, Williams faces a sentence of probation up to 14 years in prison.
