Chicago man charged in DuPage with being armed habitual criminal
A Chicago man has been charged with being an armed habitual criminal, accused of having a loaded handgun while out on bond and on parole.
DuPage County Judge Jeffrey MacKay set bail Tuesday at $150,000 for Deontae McClain, 28, of the 900 block of Sacramento Boulevard.
Prosecutors had requested $500,000 bail.
McClain was out on bond on a DuPage County case, and on parole on a Cook County case, when he was arrested by state police at 4:54 a.m. Sunday. Police said McClain, whose driver's license had been suspended, was driving 100 mph on I-88 near Oak Brook. Police say they found a 9 mm Beretta handgun on the floor of the vehicle, within McClain's reach. The gun had an extended magazine, containing hollow-point bullets, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office.
McClain's next court appearance is April 20.
He was charged in 2020 with possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in Naperville.
The state corrections department lists him as being on parole from a 2016 charge of felon in possession or use of firearm. It also indicates he served time for a 2011 aggravated unlawful use of a weapon conviction.
