Ohio man pleads guilty in shooting at Hampshire truck stop

A truck driver who shot at another truck driver at a Hampshire truck stop pleaded guilty Thursday to committing armed violence.

William M. Lutz, 60, accepted a prison sentence of 15 years and 6 months. He will receive credit for 649 days he has spent in the Kane County jail and must serve at least half his sentence before being eligible for release.

Charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated discharge of a firearm were dropped.

Lutz, of the 200 block of Kleen Avenue in Dayton, Ohio, got into an argument with a trucker from Pennsylvania. They argued over whether the Pennsylvania trucker was blocking a road, preventing Lutz from moving.

Lutz fired two shots from a .45-caliber handgun, striking the man's truck and grazing him in the buttocks.

It happened at 6:50 p.m. June 8, 2019, at the TravelCenters of America truck stop on Route 20.

After the shooting, Lutz drove off, parked on the side of the road at Route 47 and Interstate 90, and swallowed 30 pills in an attempt to kill himself, prosecutors said at the time of his arrest.

Lutz had no criminal history, Assistant State's Attorney David Belshan told Kane County Judge David Kliment on Thursday.
