Buffalo Grove residents might see hike in trash collection fee

Buffalo Grove residents could soon face a hike in the monthly fee the village collects to cover the costs for using the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County transfer station in Glenview.

At a recent committee-of-the-whole meeting, staff recommended the village board increase the SWANCC fee by 50 cents per month for both single-family and multifamily residential units.

The increase would move the fee from $5.65 to $6.15 a month for those in single-family homes and from $4.55 to $5.05 a month for residents of multifamily dwellings.

Deputy Village Manager Christopher Stilling said the fee has not increased in more than 10 years, while costs to SWANCC have risen. Over the last five years, he said, the village's refuse fund reserve has declined as a result of those increased costs.

In addition, the village has been exceeding the amount of refuse it expected to have hauled to the transfer station.

"Essentially, residential units are producing more garbage than our fee structure had originally projected," Stilling wrote in a memo to the village board.

The village board could vote on the recommended hike at its March 15 meeting.
