Suspect charged in fatal North Chicago shooting

A 48-year-old man has been charged in the fatal shooting Monday of a 47-year-old woman at a North Chicago apartment complex.

Montreal Porter, 48, a resident of the complex in the 0-100 block of Prairie View Court, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, the Lake County sheriff's office said in a news release Tuesday. According to police, officers responded about 6:40 p.m. Monday to reports of shots fired at the apartment complex. They arrived to find the woman with multiple gunshot wounds. She later died at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Authorities said Porter and the victim had dated. The two had an argument Monday, and the woman attempted to run from Porter. She fell down outside the complex. Porter then shot her multiple times, according to the news release.

Porter is being held in the Lake County jail on $3 million bail pending his next court hearing.
