Police: Man, woman arrested after carjackings lead to SWAT standoff in Villa Park

A man and woman were arrested in Villa Park after an hourslong standoff at a motel following two Chicago carjackings, police said Saturday.

Villa Park Police responded to the Motel 6, 10 W. Roosevelt Road, to assist the Chicago Police Department in investigating two carjackings that happened in Chicago on Friday.

Chicago police said a 20-year-old man was walking to his 2010 white Nissan Maxima in the 3700 block of West Chicago Avenue about 12:51 p.m. when multiple people approached him, displayed a gun and demanded the keys to the car. The two offenders then took off in the car, police said.

That same day at about 3 p.m. in the 7100 block of West Bryn Mawr Avenue, a woman, 59, and man, 57, were backing up their 2019 Hyundai Tucson after a crash occurred. A man then pointed a gun at the two in the Hyundai and demanded the car, police said. The two people got out of the car and the offenders hopped in the car and drove in northbound on South Harlem Avenue.

Later, Chicago police found a vehicle in the Villa Park Motel 6 parking lot related to the investigation and were attempting to find two possible suspects staying at the motel, according to a news release from the Villa Park Police Department. A woman suspect was taken into custody without incident while the man refused to leave the hotel room.

Villa Park detectives worked with Chicago police to obtain a search warrant for the motel room while a SWAT team was called to the scene, police said. The man exited the hotel room about 1:30 a.m. and surrendered. He was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities found a large amount of cannabis and two firearms inside the room, according to the release. Both suspects were taken to the CPD for further investigation and charges are pending.
