Learning how to cross-country ski in Palatine
Miles and miles of snow-covered trails greeted a group learning how to cross-country ski Saturday at Camp Reinberg in Palatine.
Every year when the weather cooperates, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County holds classes to teach people the finer points of the winter sport.
About 20 people registered for the activity, and specialists Katie Grundin and Jonny Brann were on site to make sure that everyone was all laced up and knew how to click the special boots into their skis.
The trails were groomed and ready for the skiers, who showed up with all different levels of skill.
Brann explained to the group how to glide along the snowbound trails easily and how to avoid doing the splits along the way.
"Having a good time is much more important than how many times you fall down," Brann quipped.
Michelle Thompson of Fox River Grove was one of the few participants who had some previous experience. She scooted out ahead of the group to explore the trails while many were still trying to get their snow legs.
