Believe Project: $100 to cheer up residents in a retirement community

Today's winner of a $100 bill through the Believe Project is Caryl Derenfeld of Mundelein.

Here is an excerpt of Derenfeld's story:

"I have volunteered and led religious services to seniors in a local retirement community since 2004.

"Because of the ongoing pandemic, I am not permitted into the building to conduct services, and residents are restricted in their interactions with each other in order to prevent spread of COVID. Since March, I've been sending weekly notes of encouragement to keep spirits up. I would use the $100 to give something to each resident to put a smile on their faces in this time of isolation."

• The Believe Project is awarding $100 each day in December to a different person with a great idea for how to use the money to do a good deed for someone else. If you'd like the chance to help someone, submit your idea for consideration in 150 words or fewer at events.dailyherald.com/believe/.
