Truck driver killed in rollover crash near Antioch

A 72-year-old man was killed Monday when the semitrailer truck he was driving veered off Route 173 in northern Lake County and rolled over, spilling tons of granular sludge, authorities said.

Lake County Sheriff's police said the crash occurred at about noon at Route 173 and Converse Road in Antioch Township. Deputies called to the scene arrived to find a truck and the trailer it was pulling partially jackknifed and with major damage.

Preliminary investigation shows that the 1990 Peterbilt truck was traveling west on Route 173 when it angled to the left for unknown reasons, sheriff's police said. The truck crossed into the eastbound lanes, struck a guardrail on the south side of the road then continued west until the trailer filled with approximately 25 tons of granular sludge rolled over.

The Woodstock man driving the truck was extricated from the cab by paramedics and taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital in McHenry, where he later was pronounced deceased, according to the sheriff's office. The man's identity has not been disclosed, and the McHenry County Coroner's Office is scheduling an autopsy.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
