State police: Naperville woman crashed into patrol car late Sunday night
A 21-year-old Naperville woman was arrested on charges of reckless driving and cited for a number of other traffic offenses after she crashed into an Illinois State Police patrol car late Sunday on Interstate 80 near New Lenox.
State police officials said Cheyenne T. Payton crashed into the marked state police vehicle just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday while driving west on I-80 near Francis Road.
Authorities said the trooper had activated the emergency lights while performing a traffic stop on a white Honda on the right shoulder of the interstate. The trooper was sitting inside the patrol car when it was struck by Payton's silver Chevrolet on the driver's side and then careened into the back of the Honda.
The driver of the Honda was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
The trooper and Payton were uninjured, state police officials said.
In addition to the reckless driving charge, Payton was cited for failing to follow "Scott's Law" rules which require drivers to slow down and safely change lanes when they see an emergency vehicle stopped with lights activated.
