Man gets 10-year sentence for carjacking in Oak Brook

A Florida man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison for stealing a car at Oakbrook Center mall while the owner stood nearby.

Anthony Riola, 41, pleaded guilty Oct. 30 to one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking for the Dec. 29, 2018, crime in Oak Brook.

According to authorities, Riola approached a woman, who was seated in her car, and told her to give him the car. He also told her he had a knife and brandished the weapon. After the woman fled, Riola got into the car but couldn't start it because he didn't have the keys.

Riola then approached a valet parking attendant and stole a running vehicle while the valet attendant and the owner stood nearby.

Riola has been in the DuPage County jail since his arrest on Dec. 29, 2018.

Judge George Bakalis sentenced Riola, who will have to serve at least half his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
