Four council seats up on Elgin City Council in 2021 as filing date nears

The period for candidates to file nominating petitions to run for four seats on the Elgin City Council starts next week.

Prospective candidates in the 2021 municipal election must file their petitions between Monday, Nov. 16 at 8 a.m. and Monday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. at the clerk's office in city hall, room 202, at 150 Dexter Court in Elgin.

The seats are for four-year terms. They are currently held by Corey Dixon, Terry Gavin, Baldemar Lopez and Carol Rauschenberger.

Dixon said he plans to seek another term. "My reelection team and I are excited and looking forward to the opportunity of continuing to earn the support of the residents of Elgin."

Gavin said he wasn't prepared to announce at this time, and councilman Baldemar Lopez said he hasn't yet made up his mind.

Rauschenberger didn't reply to request for comment.

Objections to nominating petitions may be filed in the city clerk's office until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2. The clerk's office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27.

A consolidated primary election will be required only if more than 16 electors file their candidacy for the four council member terms up for election. If a primary is necessary, it will be Feb. 23. The consolidated general election is April 6.
