Former Kane County jail officer charged with attempted sexual assault

A former Kane County jail officer has been charged with attempted criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse of a worker at the jail.

Russell H. Norris also is facing six counts of official misconduct, accused of touching the woman and three other jail workers in an illegal manner.

Norris, 48, of Montgomery, turned himself in Tuesday at the jail and was released on $10,000 bnail.

According to a news release from the Kane County sheriff and state's attorney offices, Norris worked for the sheriff's office for nearly 22 years and was promoted to sergeant in 2009. He was placed on administrative leave in July after an employee filed a complaint.

Norris resigned in August and was indicted Nov. 6.

According to the indictment, Norris abused and tried to sexually assault a woman between April 1 and June 20. The indictment also states that he improperly touched the woman and three others between Jan. 1, 2018, and June 30.

All the charges are felonies. If convicted of the most serious offense, Norris could be sentenced to probation or three to seven years in prison.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force investigated the case.

Norris' next court date is Dec. 8.
