Algonquin Township to consider tentative levy identical to last year's, decrease for road district

Algonquin Township trustees will consider a property tax levy that is identical to last year's at $1.558 million at an upcoming meeting.

The township road district's $3,351,678 tentative tax levy, however, is lower than last year's $3,596,162 levy by 7%. Last year's road district tax levy was a decrease from the previous year before as well.

Property taxes collected by the road district go toward the township's road and bridge fund, as well as retirement, equipment, insurance, audit, and equipment and building funds, while the township levy goes to the town and general assistance funds.

Both of these levies are still tentative and have not been voted on yet.

Algonquin Township Trustee Dave Chapman said he was very happy that in the last seven years, they hadn't raised the tax levy.

However, he pointed out the amount of money the township brings in is based on the value of the homes in the township and a lot of homes have gone up in value.

With this being the case, Chapman said the levy not rising is a good thing but also a bad thing.

"While that seems good for taxpayers, it's not anything that any business would ever do because we lose the price of inflation," he said.

Chapman added it seems like the township is doing its levy by default, instead of researching it and looking at the funds it should be levying.

The levy is set to be voted on at the Algonquin Township trustees' meeting in December.
