Stephens beats Darbro to maintain GOP control of 20th District seat

Incumbent Republican state Rep. Brad Stephens, the Rosemont mayor who was appointed to the 20th District seat last year, has defeated first-time candidate Democrat Michelle Darbro, a Chicago firefighter and paramedic, according to unofficial results.

Stephens tallied 23,576 votes to 16,692 for Darbro, the results show. The Associated Press projected Stephens to be the winner Tuesday night.

Stephens is finishing his first term in the General Assembly after being appointed to fill a seat vacated by former Rep. Michael McAuliffe, the only Chicago Republican in the Illinois House.

During the campaign, Stephens and Darbro clashed over Gov. J.B. Pritzker's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and whether powerful Speaker Michael Madigan should resign after allegations of cronyism.

The district is centered on Chicago's Northwest Side and stretches into Rosemont, Des Plaines and Park Ridge.
