Aurora Democrat defeats challenger in 83rd House District

Incumbent Aurora Democrat Barbara Hernandez fended off a challenge by Republican Donald Walter, also of Aurora, in the 83rd District.

Unofficial totals show Hernandez received an overwhelming 18,893 votes to Walter's 7,510 votes.

Hernandez is completing a four-year term on the Kane County Board. She said she has been fighting for her diverse constituency in Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery since being appointed to the state legislature in March 2019.

She previously served as chief of staff for her predecessor, Linda Chapa LaVia, who stepped down after being named director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs. Hernandez founded the Aurora Youth Summit and has served on the Aurora Township Youth Council and Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board.

District 83 includes parts of Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery.
