Hoffman Estates fishing derby gives families opportunity to enjoy the outdoors
A fishing derby Saturday in Hoffman Estates gave people who otherwise may have been cooped up indoors an opportunity to get outside and enjoy a fun activity.
Held at Fabbrini Park with social-distancing protocols in place, anglers lined the shore at designated spots and tried their luck to catch some of the bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, bullhead and maybe even a pike that inhabit the lake.
"We're catching a lot of great fish lately. Everyone's doing pretty good," said Kyle Goddard, Hoffman Estates Park District athletic manager.
The lake is stocked in the spring and fall, Goddard said.
Stations for weighing and measuring were spaced around the lake, and trophies for different age groups were presented. In addition, hourly prizes were awarded, including kid-size tackle boxes donated by Cabela's.
Though he hoped the weather would have been a little warmer, Goddard said he's glad the fishing derby gave people a chance to enjoy an outdoor activity.
"Especially with everything going on, it's nice to be able to give them some peace of mind," he said. "It's way better than being stuck inside."
