One arrested, one wanted in Elgin daylight shooting

Two Elgin men have been charged in connection with shots fired last week near the 1100 block of Fleetwood Drive on the city's near west side, according to court records.

Deonte S. Maclin, 30, of the 300 block of Raymond Street, and Raymond A. Griffin, 22, of the 600 block of Margaret Place, are charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm into a building for the shooting about 2:55 p.m. Thursday, July 9, court records show. An arrest warrant has been issued for Griffin, who remains at large.

"Evidence of gunfire was found and no injuries have been reported," wrote Elgin police in a Facebook post last week in asking residents for information.

Maclin also is charged with four counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon stemming from an incident Saturday, according to Kane County court records. No other information or details were provided.

The Daily Herald submitted a Freedom of Information Act request Tuesday; the city has five business days to respond.

Maclin posted 10% of his $350,000 bail Tuesday and was released from the Kane County jail. According to his bond conditions, he is not to possess any weapons, have no contact with two victims and is to stay away from the 1100 block of Fleetwood Drive, according to court records.

He is due in court Friday and faces a sentence of four to 15 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge from the July 9 shooting. He faces up to seven years in prison on the unlawful use of a weapon charges from the Saturday incident.

Maclin was given two years of probation after a 2011 arrest for possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, court records show.

Griffin served half of a six-year prison sentence for two arrests in 2016: residential burglary and possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner's Identification card, court records show.

In the burglary case, Griffin was confronted by a 23-year-old woman while he stole a video game system and cellphone, both of which he returned, according to prosecutors and court records.

Griffin was arrested 14 times as a juvenile, prosecutors said in previous court filings from his 2016 arrests.
