Lombard testing sewers for leaks

Lombard will conduct a smoke testing program during the week of July 20 to locate sources of water that enter the sanitary sewer system during rainstorms. Such water can overload sanitary sewers and cause sewage backups in basements and other low-lying areas.

During testing, nontoxic, nonflammable liquid smoke is pressurized through the system. The smoke will rise from manholes, vent stacks on homes and the ground where sewers may have leaks. The smoke will identify areas of the system that may require service.

Affected residents will receive a door hanger with more information before testing begins.
