Hoffman Estates manager moves up retirement to August

Hoffman Estates' longest-serving village manager has moved up his planned retirement date from early November to Aug. 14.

Jim Norris, who's been Hoffman Estates' village manager for the past 22 years, said the earlier date better accommodates his family's priorities and allows his successor a bigger role in compiling a 2021 budget for the village board to consider at the end of the year.

The search process to find his successor - for which former manager Peter Burchard has been hired to assist the village board - hasn't been affected by the change, Mayor Bill McLeod said.

"Obviously, it would be great if we could get someone in before Jim left, but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen," he said.

McLeod said the village board supports Norris' change of plans.

"We all want Jim to do what he wants to do," he said. "He's given us 22 years of service. He's given us notice."
