Band gives scholarships

Naperville Municipal Band's regular summer concert series in Central Park has been canceled, but the band is still awarding scholarships to eighth-grade students.

The band plans to award a scholarship of $250 each to one student from every middle school or junior high in Naperville Unit District 203 and Indian Prairie Unit District 204, as well as Ss. Peter & Paul and St. Raphael schools in Naperville. The scholarship is intended to help the students buy a new instrument or pursue a musical opportunity.

Students who were chosen after being nominated by their band directors are expected to be recognized at a future date.

Recipients include Manav Chandaka, Mina Chang, Amanda Cima, Alana Johnson, Daniel Kim, Kendall Klimek, Victoria Lokshin, Joe McCoy, Patrick Ramer, Andy Shehu, Shannon Walgren, Nichole Zhou and Julia Zimmerman.

The band also will air "The Best of the Best" summer performances on NCTV17 this summer. The series of 11 encore concerts is set to be presented weekly at 7:30 p.m. beginning Thursday and continue every Thursday until Aug. 13.
