District 303 board elects new president

Nick Manheim is taking the reins as president of the St. Charles Unit District 303 school board.

First elected in 2011, Manheim has served as vice president for the last four years. He was chosen this week by a majority of his colleagues to assume the top leadership role.

Former board President Carolyn Waibel has swapped positions with Manheim, now serving as second-in-command. She turned down a nomination to carry out another term as president, a role she has held since last spring.

"We have accomplished the shift in process, policy and communication we set out to do. Right now, we have to prioritize the needs of our students over board issues," Waibel said in a statement. "The administration needs stability and experience with board leadership so they can focus on adjustments on learning, student safety and social-emotional well-being of all in our district."

The board also unanimously chose Jillian Barker as secretary.
