Coronavirus claims lives of Carpentersville soldier and his mother

An Army Reservist from Carpentersville has become the third member of the military to die from COVID-19, officials said Wednesday.

Sgt. Simon Zamudio, 34, of Carpentersville, died last Friday at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, three days before his 70-year-old mother, Ma Gloria Cervantes, also died from complications of the virus, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The Willow funeral home in Algonquin said a private service for both was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Zamudio, was assigned to the 371st Theater Movement Control Element in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2015 and had been promoted to the rank of sergeant last month, according to Lt. Col. Simon B. Flake, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Reserve Command. Flake said Zamudio was not on active duty at the time of his death.

Zamudio is survived by his wife, Carina Zamudio-Ramos, and daughter, Xoe Zamudio, as well as four siblings, according to an obituary posted by the funeral home

In March, Capt. Douglas Hickok of the New Jersey Army National Guard, died of complications of the virus before his unit was mobilized. The next month, Navy Chief Petty Officer Charles Robert Thacker Jr. assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt, died after testing positive for the virus.
