DuPage courts further postpone most cases, but civil hearings to resume May 18

Hearings for some civil court cases will resume May 18 in DuPage County courts, using video and telephone conference.

The move was announced Friday by the chief judge's office, as it updated previous rulings regarding restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Judge Daniel Guerin's order postpones most criminal, juvenile and all traffic matters, through June 5.

However, hearings will take place for people who are in custody or who have speedy-trial-demand deadlines soon approaching.

The main courthouse in Wheaton will remain open, but traffic courtrooms there and in Downers Grove and Addison will remain closed.

"While many cases must be rescheduled and courtrooms closed, expanded technology does allow us to resume hearing civil cases on their scheduled court dates beginning May 18, 2020," Guerin said in a news release.

Civil jury trials will not take place until Aug. 24. Criminal jury trials will not take place until July 20.

Marriage and civil-union ceremonies will not be performed until June 12.
