Aurora man charged with threatening 2 judges, state's attorney, others via mail

A 36-year-old Aurora man held at the Kane County jail on charges he spit on a police officer in 2018 and has damaged his jail cell at least twice has now been charged with threatening two judges, according to state's attorney Joe McMahon and others.

Michael A. Villagran, of the 0-100 block of South Lincoln Avenue, was charged this week with seven counts of threatening a public official, a felony that carries a sentence ranging from probation to up to five years in prison, according to Kane County court records.

Villagran is accused of sending letters on March 18 "that would place a public official in reasonable apprehension of future bodily harm," according to charging documents. The letters were sent to judges D.J. Tegeler and Alice Tracy, McMahon, an assistant state's attorney, an assistant public defender and a Kane County sheriff's sergeant, according to court records.

The charging documents in the court file did not specify the threat. Pat Gengler, Kane County undersheriff and department spokesman, said he could not comment on the specific message, only that Villagran "threatened physical harm" to the recipients.

Villagran is held on $204,000 bail, meaning he must post $20,400 to be released while the charges are pending.

According to court records, Villagran was arrested and charged with aggravated battery to a police officer in July 2018 and later charged twice with damaging sprinkler heads in his jail cell in August 2019 and April 18, 2020, according to court records.

Court records show he has also has refused to leave his cell for court appearances on several occasions.

If convicted of aggravated battery to a police officer, Villagran faces a sentence ranging from probation to up to seven years in prison. He is next due in court Wednesday.
