Lombard blood drive April 15

The village of Lombard will host its next regularly scheduled blood drive from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 15.

The blood drive is set to take place at five locations instead of the typical two, in part, because Lombard village hall is closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Versiti mobile coaches will be available to accept donations at 24 Yorktown Center and 42 Yorktown Center on the campus of Yorktown mall along Highland Avenue near 22nd Street in Lombard.

From 1 to 7 p.m., the blood drive will be in the field house at Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard; in the large gym at the B.R. Ryall YMCA at 49 Deicke Drive in Glen Ellyn; and in the gym at Ackerman Park, 800 S. St. Charles St., Glen Ellyn.

The blood donation process itself poses no risk of infecting a donor with the COVID-19 virus, according to Versiti Blood Center of Illinois, and Versiti employees are taking precautions including social distancing, washing hands and sanitizing beds. Donors are asked to allow 90 minutes for the donation process with additional precautions, instead of the usual 60 minutes.

A previous "On Call Hero" blood drive March 31 at Yorktown Convenience Center in Lombard collected 20 pints of blood, enough to help save up to 60 lives.
