McHenry County Scout leaders organizing virtual campout

Songs, scary stories, tutorials and cooking lessons are on the agenda this weekend during a virtual campout hosted by McHenry County-area Scouts BSA leaders.

Beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday morning, organizers will post camping-related videos to help Scouts and other participants brush up on their skills, learn new Dutch oven recipes, or practice skits and songs, among other activities.

After setting up a campsite in their backyards, basements, living rooms or RVs, campers will be encouraged to share photos or videos of the tasks they complete, such as building a campfire or taking a hike with their families. They can also show off their camping gear, crafts, meals and games throughout the weekend.

The goal is to provide kids and their families with fun activities and interaction while still practicing social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, said Sarah Frey, a Scouts BSA volunteer who has three sons in Crystal Lake troops.

"We are just trying to figure out a different method to get people connected in a time when they feel isolated," Frey said.

The virtual campout stemmed out of a group message between Tyson Carter and Leah and David Beeson, Cary residents who sit on various committees for the Sycamore District of the Blackhawk Area Council.

The event was initially planned for Scouts in the district, which primarily covers McHenry County, Frey said. Organizers later decided to open it up to anyone interested in participating, regardless of whether they're from the area or even involved in Scouts.

For the kids who are in Scouts, the virtual campout offers an opportunity to earn requirements, such as teaching others how to pitch a tent or learning how to build a fire, Frey said.

Carter's sons, 9-year-old Phineas and 13-year-old Declan, have been putting together their own tutorials to participate. Declan created a video on making indoor s'mores over a candle, while his younger brother is teaching viewers how to make homemade kazoos.

"Scouts from all over the country have started sending some quick tutorials," Carter said. "We expect the real bulk of activity to pick up as people share their activities throughout the weekend."
