Chavez wins District 5; Afzal narrowly wins District 4

Amy Chavez of Naperville cruised to an easy victory in the Democratic primary for DuPage County Board District 5 on Tuesday, defeating Mary Jo Mullen of Lisle.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial final vote totals showed Chavez with 10,240 votes and Mullen with 7,753.

Chavez will face Republican newcomer Kevin Coyne, a Naperville City Council member, in the general election in the district that covers all or parts of Aurora, Lisle, Naperville, Warrenville and Woodridge.

In the crowded primary race for the Democratic nomination in District 4, Hadiya Afzal of Glen Ellyn narrowly defeated Lynn LaPlante of Glen Ellyn.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial final vote totals showed Afzal with 4,262 votes and LaPlante with 4,233.

Three other candidates, Janette DeFelice of Glen Ellyn, John Jacobs of Wheaton, and Hailey Nicewanner of Glen Ellyn trailed far behind. Afzal is a college student; LaPlante ran two years ago for county board chairman.

Afzal will face incumbent Republican Tim Elliott of Glen Ellyn in the general election in November.

District 4 includes all or parts of Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Wheaton and Winfield.
