Maple Park voters favor allowing recreational pot dispensaries

Maple Park voters decided Tuesday that they are OK with having recreational marijuana sold in the village.

The votes were cast in an advisory referendum, however, which means it is up to the village board to decide whether to allow retail dispensaries.

The vote was 133 in favor and 96 against, according to unofficial results.

In September, three trustees on the village board voted against prohibiting recreational sale, two voted to prohibit it, and one trustee was absent.

In October, the board decided to ask residents' opinions via referendum.

The state began allowing recreational marijuana sales Jan. 1.
