Martwick gets win in Democratic state senate primary

Robert Martwick has spent the past nine months serving as a senator in Illinois Senate District 10 after being appointed to fill the seat vacated when John Mulroe stepped down to become a judge.

Now, Martwick will get a chance to serve a full term after winning his party's nomination in Tuesday's Democratic primary by defeating challenger Daniel "Danny" O'Toole. Unofficial results showed Martwick with nearly 55% of the vote with only a few precincts yet to report in the suburbs and city.

Martwick will advance to the November general election to face Republican newcomer Anthony Beckman, a Norridge police officer, in the district that stretches from the Northwest Side of Chicago into suburbs such as Niles, Des Plaines, Rosemont and Park Ridge. Beckman ran unopposed in his party's primary.

Martwick is a self-described liberal who touted his ability to work across the aisle, first as a state representative for six years and most recently as a senator.
